Dream Team

Dear Parent,

The purpose of the PSAT is to practice for the SAT and to provide recognition and scholarships for the top students in the country.  The National Merit Scholarship program awards letters of commendation to the top 50,000 scores from juniors taking the October PSAT test.  The top 15,000 reach National Semi-Finalist status and then 5,000 students reach the level of National Merit Finalist.  The Finalists are chosen from the PSAT scores, later SAT scores, grade point average and school/community activities.

The starting point for the scholarship is one test, on one day.  Some students with strong abilities do not test well and the pressure takes its toll.  Their grades in high school are definitely a better indicator of their abilities.  We have created a class that we call the Dream Team to let the students show the world just how bright they really are.  We group the academically strongest sophomores and teach them how to overcome the test.  Each student then decides how hard he or she wants to work to achieve his or her goals.

I call it "perfect education."  The teachers are excited about teaching the class, the students are talented and motivated and the system works.  For the past five years we have seen the scores rise dramatically from their sophomore to their junior year PSAT.

We will be having students from Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth with public and private schools represented. Each class will meet for two hours a week during a five-week period starting in April.  Students will have an option of attending different classes in case of schedule conflicts.  We will take a break over the summer (there will be optional assignments) and then return for seven more weeks prior to the October PSAT.

The classes will be for sophomores with a 3.5 GPA or higher that are taking Algebra Two Trig or higher and Honors English.  If the student does not have a high GPA, we will accept him or her with a score of 1200 or higher on the SAT or a 180 PSAT index.    Please understand that this class is not for everyone.  There will be 25 students in each class and the focus will be on the harder problems that are on the test. The work is very intense and we want students who are ready to work at the highest level.  We do have other programs for students that do not fit the mold of this class.

Sincerely,

Glenn LaFerriere
